What lies around us
Neoi Poroi is a good base: within a short drive you have a Byzantine castle, the archaeological site of Dion, the trailheads of Mount Olympus and a whole string of small coastal villages.
A handful of relaxed beach bars line the shore: Palmyra directly on the sand (the family’s own pick), Sunshine at Poseidonos 34 with sunbeds, food and sunset drinks, Pirate Beach Bar at Poseidonos 22 for cocktails and comfortable sunbeds, Ammos at Poseidonos 6 — large, clean and with sunbed sets including a drink — the quieter, good-value Amethystos and Moroa at the southern end of the beach, relaxed and open late.
Most of the tavernas sit on the beachfront road Poseidonos, a few minutes from the house: Bokovo (Poseidonos 80) for gyros, grill and burgers, one of the most popular spots in the village; Dionysos (Poseidonos 68), a classic Greek taverna with generous portions; Taverna Stelios (Poseidonos 18) for fresh fish with a sea view; Athos Tavern, quieter and known for seafood; and Kyma Tavern with Greek grill and a shaded terrace. The seaside promenade is where the village meets in the evening: a slow stroll along the water, small shops for beach things, souvenirs and local products. For coffee, Franklin Coffee House at Poseidonos 22 serves specialty coffee, and Mikel Coffee is the reliable stop on the promenade.
The regional capital of Pieria, about 40 minutes by car. Its lively pedestrian centre around Plateia Eleftherias is made for an evening stroll: fashion and shoe shops, bookshops, cafés and restaurants. You will also find the largest supermarkets and shopping centres of the area, the general hospital, banks and public services, plus a big open-air street market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Skotina and Palaios Panteleimonas with its restored stone houses and mountain views, Gritsa — known for its seafood tavernas — and the small cove of Kastri-Loutro are all easy half-day trips.
